Kindred Spirits

kingdom friends forever!

Judy Block

I was thinking the other day of a women celebrity and how I wished I could write her a letter and say “thank you”. Her charm and love for Jesus is obvious in who she is and what she does. I saw her perform live once and she shared with the audience of her love for God and Jesus. So, as I was writing her this letter in my mind, I thought of how I would tell her: we have kindred spirits.
I love the phrase, “kindred spirits or kindred souls”.

The dictionary says: a kindred spirit or kindred soul is a person’s relatives collectively; kinfolk; or having the same belief, attitude, or feeling.

I personally feel a kindred spirit can be more than that. That it could be a sort of silent endearment of respect for each other. I believe the Blog’ettes have that kind of endearment for each other. A common love and respect for each other that comes from walking with the same Savior Jesus in the Holy Spirit. I pray it spills out of this website and touches all those who visit us. That sista’ love, as Victoria Cleveland would say.

Anne Shirley of Green Gables

This phrase “kindred spirits”, takes me back to the wonderful series “Anne Shirley of Green Gables” written by L. M. Montgomery.
For those of you who don’t know Anne Shirley, her story and character was that of an adopted little girl with a great use of adjectives and imagination who wanted to be a famous writer in 1908. If you should take the time to watch the trailer or any of the series, you will not be disappointed. It is a delight to watch, and you will see the characters are rich in wonderful old expressions and humor.
Yay for kindred spirits!
Here are a few quotes from Anne of Green Gables. I had to stop myself at 6, okay 7. Anne Shirly is so full of life, humor and beautiful inspirations!

“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think.
It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.”

“Don’t let’s ever be afraid of things. Let’s be daring and adventurous and expectant! Let’s dance to meet life and all it can bring to us!”

“One can dream so much better in a room where there are pretty things.”

“I always wanted to be your friend Katherine spelled with a ‘K’. Underneath all your prickles, you really are a kindred spirit.”

“I cannot tie myself down to anything so unromantic as dishwashing at this thrilling moment!”

“I believe that the nicest and sweetest of days are not those which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens, but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.”

“True friends are always together in spirit.”

Laurie Durham

Lately I’ve felt the gentle nudge of Holy Spirit confirming and reaffirming in me . . . family.

Just a few nights ago while at a praise and worship night, I heard in my spirit: ‘look around you and see your family’. I looked around and saw women whom I love and admire greatly!

Two days later I was at my home church visiting with my pastor after the service. I was sharing with him a revelation I had received during something he had spoken about. When I had finished telling him with tears flowing, he hugged me and said, ‘we are family’!

And then the next night while visiting with a couple of friends, one lady said, ‘we are family’!

Over a span of three days I visited three different places and had three different people say the same thing to me, ‘we are family’!

That is no coincidence!

I have heard people say that ” kindred spirit” have the same interests. I personally believe it means much more than that! I believe God brings kindred spirits into our lives for many reasons.

Some of those reasons being:
(a) they affirm our purpose
(b) they encourage and inspire us
(c) they totally get us
(d) you feel a deep connection
(e) they have very similar passions and convictions as you
(f) they believe in you.

Kindred spirits do not compete. They complete one another. I know in my own life, those “kindred spirits” are family even if not by blood, they are by heart!

While Judy has elaborated so beautifully in her blog on Kindred Spirits, she has asked me to share my thoughts on the subject as well.

While we can all relate to kindred spirits, and know someone with whom we have a meaningful ‘connection’ in one way or another, there is still another kind of kindred spirit. That special bond we have with others who have the same ideas and interests as we do is a special gift from God. But still, there is another type of kindred spirit.

This type of oneness, or kindred spirit, that I am referring to, is the supernatural kind that comes from the very spirit of God. It comes from the commandment Jesus talks about in John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”

While I don’t know everything there is to know about this type of love, I do know that God is beginning to draw my spirit up and into a ‘connectedness’ with others that I’ve never even met. I feel a love developing for these. They are of the same spiritual household as mine. They are my brothers and sisters that I’ve never met; they are my kindred spirits. Some I know from a distance, others I don’t know, and still others I have probably passed on the street and wasn’t aware they were part of my spiritual family. These I’m referring to are my God-given kindred spirits.

Jesus instructed us to “Love one another as He has loved us.” I must admit there are times I’ve not been very good at this, especially to those that are not so loveable. There are many times I haven’t felt like being sociable, much less going the extra step and loving others. But that is all changing!

You see, God is doing an incredible work right now in His people. He is answering the prayer of His Son “that they all may be one, as You, Father are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one is Us…” (John 17:21). He is praying that we ALL will become kindred spirits of the highest order! “That the world may believe that You sent Me, and the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one.”

I have recently carried a burden in my heart for the chaos and tragedy of so many, and have been awakened in the night to pray for many. God is causing me to look at people differently; to see others the way He sees them, to feel His heart for them. He’s doing a new work in me, as I’m sure He’s doing with many. He is creating a divine connection in His people…those we know and those we don’t; because we are kindred spirits. And we will one day have the opportunity to meet those we have prayed for and been connected to in the spirit. Imagine the overwhelming love and joy that will come from a multitude of kindred spirits, all worshiping and giving praise to our Bridegroom King and Heavenly Father! What a family reunion that will be!!
